5Did we receive the same set?
By Squirrelgod
I just received the Halex 6 Player Platinum Croquet Set. At first I was reluctant to order the set based on the one negative review, but after some online research, I was able to determine that the previous reviewer either received an inferior earlier version of the product or simply inadvertently entered her review for a different product here. Anyway, based on her description, It's pretty obvious that the set she received is different from the set I received and currently being marketed as the Halex 6 Player Platinum set.

The set arrived a day early and in excellent condition. Notably, the set is contained in typical corregated cardboard packaging with glossy images designed for effective marketing on store shelves. There are no wooden box, latches, or tiny screws anywhere in the package. The set comes with a nicely finished woven synthetic fiber canvas bag with a drawstring closure which is large enough to store all of the components fully assembled. (i.e. no having to disassemble and reassemble the mallets to store or set up the games.) The nicely finished adult-sized mallets have nice 33 inch long handles turned from a single piece of hardwood stock. Each elegantly detailed cigar-shaped mallet head is turned from a center portion of a trunk/limb section as concentric growth rings are evident at the face at each end of the head. any checks or other blemishes in the mallet components have been filled, sanded and each piece is finished smoothly with a glossy lacquer. The painted striping is also nicely done and better than I have seen on most other sets. Each mallet assembled easily and the wood on wood screw joint torqued down to a create a nice tight and rigid connection. no loose or wobbly mallet heads and no splits or splinters. The synthetic-material balls are very nicely finished, very solid feeling, heavier, harder, more substantial than those contained in most other sets I have seen. The only concern I have at this point is the durability of the faux leather wrapping at the handles. It has a nice cushy feel with good grip, and is a decent-looking substitute for leather, but it isn't as tightly wrapped as I would like. I suspect I will have to re-glue and tack the wrap on some of the handles after a few weekends of use.

Overall I'm pleased with the apparent quality of this set. It is certainly not the finest set available, but it is also certainly far better than most of the less than 100 dollar sets available on the market. It seems to me to be an excellent value for the money. It is nicely finished, attractively designed, and sturdy. I expect it to be more than durable enough for occasional weekend use with my family and friends. I have not used this set yet, but if I have any unpleasant surprises, I will update this review accordingly.

1Shoddy workmanship
By Gold River Girl
The wooden box that the set was in had latches that were of such poor quality and had such small screws holding the box hinges together that most had fallen off during shipping. None of the mallet heads would attach to the handles. I'm not sure that the mallet heads would not crack during usage since there were no strengthing metal bands.

4So far, pretty good
By Michael Barr
I've had this set for a couple weeks now, and generally it's been good. Got it on sale at Dunhams Sporting goods for $80 plus tax. Both balls and mallets are heavier than other sets we've owned, a good thing I think. However, the balls seem to dent a bit after a hard hit (not extremely hard, but appropriate for a long shot). This is a concern and leaves me wondering how these balls will hold up over time. But, I have plenty of balls left over from older sets; it's the old mallets that chip and wear away after many uses.
